1965 VOX JMI AC4 vibrato combo amp

The Vox AC-4 was a small practice amp for guitar that was introduced in 1958 and originally marketed as the AC-2.

In 1962, the AC-2 was renamed the AC-4. The new name might suggest an increase in output power, but this was not the case. In reality, the AC-4 had the same circuits and power output as the AC-2. The original power output of the AC-2 was about 3.5 watts RMS (6 watts peak), so JMI chose to rename the amp to AC-4 to reflect the actual power output. 1965 Was the final year of production of the original AC-4, making this one of the last examples to leave the Dartford factory.

This particular AC-4 has the original power and output transformer, black tolex covering with the smaller VOX logo on the front, replaced black VOX diamond lattice grillcloth, the original hinged handle, and two black metal vents stamped VOX. The speaker looks 60's but it is a replacement as the original 8" Elac speaker had several repairs to the conus (included in the sale). The footswitch is also a replacement and someone attached a jack-plug connection for the footswitch through the lower back panel. Also some screws, capacitors and 1 pot have been replaced. Inside the cabine someone put some alu and copper foil to prevent the amp from receiving Russian long wave radio transmitions.

This is not your every day mint collectors amp but still a nice vintage little VOX AC4 that you can bring around with gigs, recordings etc without worrying it needs a repair or modification to sound right.
